On a recent trip to Austin I was fortunate enough to partake in some of the local food that made me contemplate moving to Austin. Pluckers, a small little wing chain that has recently undergone a facelift, is pretty simple when looking at their menu. Typical variations of chicken and beef prepared various ways, served along side tall beers and good company.
Once you try their wings though they are anything but simple. The ranch wings and teriyaki wings are ridiculously good, the beers are quite large, and the service was friendly.
Don’t take my word for it, hear what some locals have to say!

I Was in Newport Beach today with Steve Averill of OCbizblog.com interviewing our most recent winner from OCjobtalk.com at a quaint little coffee shop called Kean Coffee in Newport Beach. I’m not too big of a coffee fan, although I do fancy a drink every now and then, but I was blown away at the way Kean (owned by the Diedrichs family) does coffee. Gone is the corporate, tract-home look of other
coffee shops. This place serves up big cups of coffee in large bowl cups that give one the feeling of being a guest in somebody’s home. In fact, I had the privilege of meeting Karen Diedrich there and after a brief conversation with her, definitely felt like a welcome guest there more than a customer.
And let’s face it that’s what independent small businesses can offer easier and more readily than corporations. Kean Coffee gets it. They go so far as to make their delicious coffee drinks into beautiful masterpieces turning creama and foam into hearts, leaves, and branches.
Stop on in, try the Turkish Latte, bring a book and relax. The Diedrichs have been waiting for you.

In the time it take to count to 3, you may have either successfully sold your potential client, or lost them amidst the crowd of your competitors.
Tic. Tock.
Tic. Tock.
Tic. Tock.
Three seconds.
That’s all you’ve really got to make the sale.

I read this great post on Design Sojurn and was immediately struck by that phrase which was the premise of their post. As a designer, it is my job to create visually impacting work that engages the viewer and captures their attention. The writers over at Design Sojurn made a list of how they think you can successfully capture your market’s attention and I think it’s pretty darn good:
1) Create a Unique Design Identity
2) Strategic Designs that Communicate
3) Only Winning Designs may Apply
4) Not Just a Wow Factor, but a Meaningful Wow Factor
5) Consistency is the Key to Prosperity
This is a great list, but I’d like to add a couple more bullets to that list.

For those of you still bound to the desks at your corporate jail cells, please study this video carefully as it may not only help you survive in that horrid environment but it may also make you laugh. While you’re chuckling at your desks, taking notes on work avoidance techniques, and rearranging your clutter to avoid “getting caught fung shui”, remember to give a silent shout out to Krystalline Armendariz, Dennis Liu, and their team for putting this vid together.

I had the opportunity to visit the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana a few days ago with my brother for the Chapman University Alumni mixer held at Memphis restaurant (which is deliciousness btw!). Held in the Artist District, this little gem of a place is a great little haven of art places, live music, the Art center of course, and my favorite of all which was the lithography studio. I took printmaking in college and really love the process of making a plate, inking, and printing your own editions.

My good friend, and former co-worker Albert Ornelas (@ocgente) has launched his new blog-site OCgente.com. It’s a great blog that definitely has the potential to be a big hit. Focusing on the people of Orange County, the movers, shakers, and motivators. It also takes a good look at Orange County’s prolific Latino Community and highlights much of the good that they are doing. It’s a great way to get connected into a community that, for being as large as it is, often gets overlooked. OCgente.com has already received some recognition from UCI and on blogederra.com and is only beginning to pick up steam.
Best of luck to Team OCgente and I look forward to working with you guys in the future! (Guest bloggers FTW!)

OCjobtalk.com, an Orange County hyperlocal, job community created with Steve Averill of OCbizblog.com has celebrated it’s 100th member today! (as of this post it’s actually at 112). This is a great success for us and the site as it has continually grown each day and more and more activity is taking place on the site. In celebration of this milestone, we’ve decided to give away an iPod shuffle to one random member (1-106).
If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, hop on over to the community and help us continue to NETwork to GETwork!

3 Shot Burst #1: Top Reasons to Use Viddler
Filed Under Interviews, Social Media, Twitter | Comments

Hey folks, I’d like to introduce the first segment in a series that I’m calling “3 Shot Bursts.” The name pays homage to my time in the Army and comes from a setting on the M4 and M16 rifles that only allows the weapon to fire three rounds at a time once the trigger is “depressed” (the lay person would say “pulled”). Technically the name of the series should be “3 Round Burst” but that would just get confusing if you didn’t know what the name alluded too . . . and now I’m off topic. Okay, so anyway (ehem!) I’m a list guy and like to ask people their “Top 3’s” for food, movies, bands, you name it so the named seemd apropos.
Read the reason after the jump!
